---Introduction to Chinese Learning Program in BUCT   


Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) is one of China’s key institutions of higher learning. As a comprehensive university with a core curriculum of science, law, economic management and languages, the university attaches great importance to international academic exchange and cooperation. It has established academic links with more than 80 universities in 25 countries and regions.
It started to train international student Chinese language and culture since 1992. At present there are about 300 international students learning Chinese language and culture every year. It offers both long-term and short-term Chinese language and culture programs every semester. Up to now, there have been over 3000 overseas students from about 40 countries and regions studying Chinese language and culture in BUCT. The teaching quality, the humane management and study environment have been highly regarded by the international students.

Long-term Chinese Language Program

The Chinese Language Training Centre (CLTC) of BUCT offers a wide range of Chinese language courses for international students in China and abroad. Students who want to learn Chinese for over four months are suggested to apply for this program.

  1. Timetable: The courses of Chinese language will be given from Monday to Friday, totally

about 20-24 class hours per week during each term.

  1. Class Levels: The centre offers various levels of classes for trainees including elementary,

intermediate and advanced Chinese classes. Students will be assigned to suitable level classes after an entrance examination.

  1. Curriculum Arrangement:  

Required Courses: Intensive Reading, Spoken Language, Listening Comprehension, Pronunciation, Reading, Composition, Listening & Speaking, and Watching & Listening, etc.
Culture Experiencing Courses (Elective): Chinese Character Writing, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Painting, Martial Art, Introduction to China, and Technological Chinese, etc.
HSK Training class (Elective): A regular HSK intensive training class is organized every semester To be sure that the students can be well prepared for HSK exam,

  1. Language Practice and Chinese Culture Experiencing Activities:

The centre provides various kinds of activities for our students to practice Chinese and experience Chinese culture. Besides the Culture experiencing courses mentioned above, activities also include but not limit to:
­Linguistic practice trips to scenic spots and places of historical sites around Beijing
­Gatherings and activities such as watching Peking opera, acrobatics, appreciating traditional Chinese music and painting.
­Language Buddy Program: In order to help international students adapt to life in China and to understand Chinese life, each international student, upon request, can be paired with one Chinese volunteer student to form a one-to-one partner.

Admission Requirements  

Anyone who is interested in learning Chinese, experiencing Chinese culture and preparing for further specialties study in China is eligible for applying for the program.

  1. Where is BUCT located?

The BUCT Campus is just situated in the center of Beijing, close to the embassy district. It has an easy access to many public transportation (three subways and dozens of bus lines which provide convenient ways to many famous visiting sites and shopping and business centers.)

  1. How about the accommodation?

    CLTC provides accommodation for overseas students on the campus. The standard bedroom is offered at the price of 50RMB per bed per day with bathroom, hot water of 24 hours, TV, telephone, air conditioner, internet, public kitchens, and washing machines, etc.

  1. How about safety and medical insurance?

Overseas students admitted by BUCT are automatically covered by the Comprehensive Insurance. The students can get to know the details of it when they come to BUCT. Furthermore, students can also take out other health liability insurance.

  1. How about the Chinese language courses?

From Monday to Friday, students are asked to have Required Courses for 4-6 hours per day, they can choose the cultural experiencing Courses, HSK training courses by themselves.

Short-term Chinese and Chinese Culture Programs

The short-term Chinese Language and Culture Programs at BUCT intend to meet the demands of foreign students who are interested in a short-term study (from one week to two months) in China. Group applications of more than ten students can be accepted as a short-term class, and individual applications are also welcomed and will be reviewed case-by-case.
Types of Training Programs:

    1. Chinese Language
    2. Chinese Culture
    3. Chinese Language and Culture.

The programs can also be specially tailored to the group needs.
Study Arrangement:

  1. Curricula:

Chinese Language Program:
Main Courses: Intensive Reading, Listening Comprehension, and Spoken Chinese, etc.
Extracurricular Activities: Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Painting, Martial Art and Characters Writing, etc. (twice a week in the afternoon)
Chinese Culture Program:
Main Courses: Chinese History, Religion, Culture, Survey of China, Art of Chinese Architecture, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Painting, and Martial Art, etc.
Extracurricular Courses: Spoken Chinese, Intensive Reading, and Characters Writing, etc. (twice a week in the afternoon)
Chinese Language and Culture:
Main Courses: Intensive Reading, Listening Comprehension, Spoken Chinese, Chinese History, Religion, Culture, Survey of China, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Painting, and Martial Art etc.
Extracurricular Activities: Language Practices (trips to local culture sites)

The exact curriculum of each group program can be also determined through bilateral agreement.

  1. Teachers:

       Teachers for language training are all the university professional language teachers. Some of the teachers for Chinese culture are experienced professors at academic institutions.

  1. Teaching Language:

Language training courses are lectured in Chinese most of the class hour, if necessary, English will also be considered as an assistant language. Courses on Chinese Culture can be taught both in Chinese and English, which will be depend on the students’ language background.

  1. Class Levels:

The university offers three-level classes for trainees: elementary, intermediate and advanced Chinese classes. Students will be placed in different level classes according to the results of their Chinese proficiency exam taken after admission.
Study Period and Length of Study:
Foreign students are welcome to BUCT at any time of the year. The length of study can vary from one week to two months. The detail requirements can be met upon further discussion.
Extra Services Offered:

  1. BUCT supplies one free weekend trip to local cultural sites every two weeks.
  2. Ground transportation is provided between the airport and the university for each group.
  3. All kinds of opportunities for foreign students to practice Chinese and experience Chinese culture are provided.
  4. Students will receive a BUCT student ID upon registration and program certificate upon completion of the program.
